West Pier Show and Tell

Scheduled over a 2 hour period, this event is designed to help us enhance our West Pier archive and is part of Brighton & Hove Heritage Open Day.

Date: Sunday 12th September

Time: 12 noon – 2pm

Place: Fishing Museum (Brighton seafront between the piers)

Come along with your memories, reminiscences and any records you might have, be they photos, letters, posters, etc., and help us develop a truly personal tribute to the West Pier.

We will make every effort to capture your contributions on the day. Arrangements can be made for subsequent home visits should they be required. Your input, be it funny, quirky or serious will be greatly appreciated, we look forward to seeing and hearing from you!

Tours every Sunday at 11am (lasts approximately an hour).

Meet in front of the West Pier Rock Shop on the upper prom, King’s Road

Tickets £5. Children under 12 free.

Peter James Evening

International best selling crime writer Peter James has been a supporter of the Trust for many years. A a fund-raiser for the Trust he generously offered to talk about his latest book and his colourful experiences researching his novels with the Brighton police.

The event, which sold out, took place at Alfresco Restaurant on 23rd June. It was a beautiful evening and Peter gave his talk with the Pavilion structure glimmering behind him in the setting sun. It was a great success – the atmosphere was lively and convivial and crucial funds were raised for the Trust.

Local book sellers, Sussex Stationers, ran a stall at the event, selling Peter James’s books.

Tours and Talks for Schools

The Trust runs tours, talks and activities for schools either on site or classroom based. Activities are be tailored to the National Curriculum and the needs of invidual groups of children – e.g. the West Pier and the Brighton Seafront Story fits neatly into the Development of Brighton as a Seaside Town. International best-selling local crime writer Peter James is a long-term supporter of the Trust and has generously offered to give a talk at a fundraising social event at Alfrescos Restaurant on 23^rd June. Peter sets his novels in and around Brighton and an atmospheric photo of the pier often features on the front cover of his books. He will give a reading from his latest novel, “Dead Like You” and talk about his research behind the scenes with Sussex Police and the darker side of his beloved city. Tickets will cost £15 for members and £20 for non-members. The price will include generous canapés and a glass of wine – an informal meal. This will be a great opportunity to meet Peter in a convivial setting with wonderful views of the pier. Special Engineering Tour Led by Jon Orrell – Sunday 25th April at 11am

The Trust’s consultant engineer and pier expert, Jon Orrell of Hemsley Orrell Partnership will be leading a special tour on 25th April at 11am on the engineering of piers in general and of the West Pier in particular. This will be a fascinating insight into the unique engineering of the pier and not to be missed. Meet on the upper prom, in front of the Rock Shop. Tickets £5, children under 12 free.

Photographs, Films and Memories

The Trust is launching a new drive to build up its archive with the aim of creating as full a picture as possible of the operating West Pier.

We are especially interested in personal photographs, film and memories of people who used the pier from pleasure or worked for the pier company.

Do you have any photos including family snapshots or postcards or film taken on or near the West Pier which you would be happy for us to publish on our website? Or could you send us a written account of your memories of the pier?

We also wish to create an oral history of the pier and are looking to interview people who used the pier up to its closure in 1975.

We are also planning a special, one-off memory collection event as part of the Heritage Open Day celebrations on 12th September – more news on this later in the year.

West Pier Market

The popular West Pier market, sited on the beach by the pier, starts operating again for the new season from Saturday 6th March. It takes place every weekend, bank holidays and seven days a week through the summer months. Goods sold include original clothing, jewellery, art work, ceramics, leather products and second hand books. It is a colourful and lively attraction and well worth a visit.
